Our History
1943
Richardson’s Farming Roots in Manitoba
The Kelburn property existed as part of Richardson’s agricultural presence in Manitoba. During this era, Muriel Sprague Richardson — who led James Richardson & Sons Limited from 1939 to 1966 — helped significantly expand the company’s agricultural operations and Prairie presence.
Originally established by Muriel as a thriving stock farm known for its Shorthorn cattle, the site later transitioned into a grain farming operation.
1997
The ‘Flood of the Century’ Hits the Red River Valley
In the spring of 1997, the Red River flood — later known as the “Flood of the Century” — caused significant damage to the farm, ending its role as a commercial operation. Rather than walk away from the site, Richardson chose to rebuild and reimagine its future.
1997–2013
Richardson Establishes Kelburn Farm
Richardson transformed the site into a modern demonstration farm focused on grower education, agronomic demonstration, and field-scale crop trials in Manitoba’s Red River Valley.
Over time, the site continued to evolve through ongoing investments and became a lasting reflection of Richardson’s belief that long-term agricultural success depends on education, partnership, stewardship, and continuous improvement.
